PlayStation5 Dual Sense Joypad Repair
13/03/25Joypad drift is one of the most common and frustrating problems for gamers: the character moves on its own, the view rotates without the stick being touched, menus advance automatically. In this article we explain the causes of the problem and how to solve it permanently.
How analog sticks work
Each knob is equipped with two axes — vertical and horizontal — each managed by a circular potentiometer. Inside the potentiometer, a small spring-loaded metal slider moves across a resistive painted surface: based on its position, the console receives two numerical values that precisely indicate the knob's tilt.

Resistive film worn by friction
Continuous friction between the slider and the paint, over time, degrades the resistive film. When the surface is compromised, the potentiometer sends an incorrect signal to the console: PlayStation interprets the knob as shifted from the resting position, generating the drift phenomenon.
Why cleaning and lubricating doesn't work
Lubricating sprays, internal cleaning and compressed air don't solve the problem. The cause of drift is not dirt, but structural damage: the resistive surface is physically worn and cannot be restored. Lubrication can temporarily slow deterioration, but it doesn't eliminate existing damage.
The only real solution is component replacement — preferably with technology superior to the original.
The definitive solution: magnetic sensors (Hall effect technology)
Hall effect sensors replace potentiometer technology with a completely different operating principle:
- Instead of the metal slider, there is a small magnet
- Instead of the resistive film, there is a chip sensitive to magnetic fields
Magnetic sensor chip (Hall effect technology)
The magnet that replaces the mechanical slider
The chip continuously analyzes the magnetic field generated by the magnet and derives the exact position of the knob. The fundamental advantage is that the two components never come into contact: without friction there is no wear, and drift will never reappear.
The upgrade service for PS5 DualSense
Our laboratory upgrades PS5 DualSense analog sticks with high-quality magnetic sensors. The joypad is tested in the customer's presence before proceeding, to verify together which axes present the problem and choose the most suitable intervention.
The service is available in two variants:
- Complete upgrade — replacement of both analog sticks: the recommended choice for those who want to eliminate the problem at its root
- Targeted intervention — replacement of only the axis or stick that presents drift: more economical solution when the problem concerns a single component
Intervention times
- Without appointment: ready within 24 hours
- With appointment: ready in 1 hour
